Bluebells

Spring has finally sprung and its here in all its glory!

In Hertfordshire we are spoilt for choice on beautiful scenic outdoor locations to shoot. The ancient woodlands across Hertfordshire make for the perfect backdrop to a family photoshoot or engagement shoot. I live in Hitchin and we are surrounded by pretty woodland.

This year the Bluebells are here a little bit earlier then last year and are in full bloom for this family shoot . The stunning purple and blues with the contrasting greens look amazing!

Heres some tips for making the most out of a Bluebell shoot with me.

Firstly its key to find the perfect Bluebell wood. If your in Hertfordshire or surrounding areas I know Stevenage, St.Albans, Hitchin or Hertford quite well so I can recommend some smaller woodlands that are easy to access. Its better to stay away from the larger woodlands such as the National trust owned woodlands because the Bluebells tend to be ropped off to stop people walking through them. But we want to get right in the middle of the sea of purple for our shots!

Its important to get the light right so going early in the morning or later in the afternoon is best. We can get beautiful shots in golden hour but equally the morning light is special and twinkles through the trees. Its better when the light is even and not in the midday sun when the light is a bit harsher.

Clothing choice is very important when shooting in the bluebells. Your clothing needs to compliment the vibrant greens and purples in the background so a neutral tones such as white, cream, grey, light pink work best. Its best to avoid dark colours and anything with pattern or branding on.

We will have to be very careful not to sit on the Bluebells as they are a protected species. We would look for patches/areas that have no bluebells or use pathways. I always shoot from low down and use the bluebells as foreground and background. I love finding an interesting fallen tree or pathway to sit my models on. Then I will shoot from a range of angles and perspectives to get a sea of purple surrounding them.
